Buying guide: Citronella

Citronella products give off the lemony scent of citronella oil and are used to add light and fragrance to patios, gardens and outdoor seating areas in the warmer months. This category covers citronella candles, tealights, torches and flares, incense sticks and coils, oil burners, torch oil, candle refills and flameless LED versions.

Types

  • Candle buckets and pots: a wax candle in a metal or ceramic container, made in several sizes from mini to extra large, with refills for some designs.
  • Torches and flares: pushed into the ground or a planter to light a path or border. Some torches hold a candle, while others burn citronella torch oil.
  • Tealights and table-top burners: small flames for tables and parasol holders.
  • Incense sticks and coils: slow-burning options that give off scented smoke, set in soil or a holder.
  • LED candles: flameless versions that give the look without a naked flame.

Using them safely

Treat every lit citronella product as a naked flame. Never leave candles, incense, burners or torches burning unattended, and put them out before you go indoors or to bed. Stand candles and tealights in heat-resistant holders on a stable surface, as tealights get very hot. Keep flames well away from anything that can catch fire, such as fabric, parasols, fences, overhanging plants and dry leaves, and out of reach of children and pets. Only refill torches once the flame is out and the torch has cooled, and follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety data for torch oil, which is flammable. Keep torch oil and filled torches out of reach of children: swallowing even a small amount can be fatal if it gets into the lungs. Where a flame is not suitable, an LED candle is a safer choice.
