Buying guide: Digging & Cultivating

Digging and cultivating tools break up, turn and level soil, and keep beds free of weeds. Spades and forks

Digging spades and forks have a large head for turning over open ground. Border spades and forks are lighter with a smaller head, for digging in borders and between established plants. A tread on top of the blade is more comfortable under your foot. Check that the handle length and grip style, such as a T, D or Y grip, suit your height and hands.

Blade material

  • Stainless steel: resists rust and soil slides off it, so it needs little care. It suits occasional gardeners.
  • Carbon steel: stronger and tougher, suited to heavy digging and cutting through roots, but it rusts unless you clean, dry and oil it after use.

Hoes, rakes and hand tools

A Dutch hoe is pushed back and forth just under the surface to slice through weeds; a draw hoe is pulled towards you and also moves soil, for example to draw a seed drill. Hoe on a dry day so the cut weeds dry out and die rather than re-rooting. For deep-rooted perennial weeds, use a fork to ease out the whole root, as chopped pieces can regrow. A soil rake levels and breaks down soil for sowing, while a lawn or leaf rake gathers moss and leaves. Hand trowels, forks and cultivators suit planting and weeding in borders and containers.
