Buying guide: Dust Sheets & Covers

Dust sheets and covers protect floors, stairs, furniture and fittings from paint, plaster, dust and spills while you decorate or carry out building work. This category covers cotton twill sheets, polythene sheets and rolls, polythene-backed cotton sheets, stair runners, and self-adhesive protection film for carpets and hard floors.

Types

  • Cotton twill: absorbent, drapes easily over furniture, and can be machine washed and used again.
  • Polythene: lightweight plastic sheeting, as single sheets or on a roll, for covering furniture and keeping dust off.
  • Polythene-backed cotton: also called laminated or poly-backed. The cotton top soaks up drips while the plastic backing stops paint seeping through to the floor.
  • Self-adhesive film: rolled out onto carpet or hard flooring to give a waterproof cover that stays in place on floors and stairs.

Choosing and using

Sheet sizes are often given in feet: 12 x 9 ft, about 3.6 x 2.7 m, is a common size, and long narrow runners cover stairs and hallways. Lay poly-backed sheets cotton side up. Carpet film and hard floor film are different products, so use the one made for the surface. Vacuum first, try a small test area, and lift carpet film within the time on the label, no more than four weeks and only one week in busy areas or warm rooms, so it does not leave a sticky residue. Carpet film is not suitable for pure wool carpets and can become slippery when wet. After the job, let any spills on fabric sheets dry, then vacuum and fold them away for next time.
