Buying guide: Electric Fires

Electric fires give the look of a real fire using an LED or similar flame effect, and most also contain a heater. They need no chimney or flue and produce no smoke. This category covers inset fires, wall-mounted fires, freestanding electric stoves and complete fire suites.

Types

  • Inset fires: slide into an existing fireplace opening or the opening in a fire surround.
  • Wall-mounted fires: hang on the wall or are built into it, including fires designed for media walls.
  • Electric stoves: freestanding fires styled like a wood burner, which can stand on a hearth or in an alcove.
  • Fire suites: a fire supplied with a matching surround and hearth, in wood, stone or marble effect finishes.

Heat, controls and power

Heat output is usually up to about 2 kW. On most models the flame effect works separately from the heater, so you can run the flames alone. Many have a thermostat and remote control, and some add timers or app control. Most electric fires plug into a nearby socket. If a fire is to be wired into a new circuit instead, that is electrical installation work: in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work must be done by a registered competent person or notified to building control.

Sizing and safety

Measure the fireplace opening, or the wall space and any recess depth, before choosing, and check the hearth size for a stove. Where young children are around, use a surrounding fireguard as well as any guard built into the fire, and do not leave them alone in a room with a heater running.
