Buying guide: Feeders, Boxes & Tables

Feeders, boxes and tables help you feed and house wild birds in the garden. The range covers hanging seed, peanut, nyjer and fat ball feeders, window and ground feeders, bird tables and nest boxes, along with seed mixes, suet balls and peanut treats.

Feeders and tables

  • Seed feeders: hanging tubes with feeding ports for mixed seed. Nyjer feeders take the very small nyjer seed and are often sold as finch feeders.
  • Peanut feeders: keep peanuts in a proper feeder so birds can only nibble small pieces. Never use mesh bags, which can trap feet, and never put out salted food.
  • Tables, trays and window feeders: flat surfaces where several birds feed together.

Disease spreads more easily on flat surfaces and where birds crowd together. Wash feeders, tables and water baths at least once a week with hot water and a mild disinfectant, clear up spilt food and move feeders around the garden. Current guidance suggests pausing seed and peanuts from May to October, while small amounts of fat balls, suet or mealworms can continue.

Nest boxes

The entrance hole decides which birds can move in: 25mm suits blue tits and coal tits, 28mm great tits and 32mm house sparrows. Choose an insulating material such as wood at least 15mm thick, with no perch, and a lid or front that opens for cleaning. Fix the box where it is sheltered from strong sun, wind and rain, ideally by late winter when pairs start looking for sites. It is an offence to damage or destroy a nest that is in use, so clean boxes out only between 1 September and 31 January.
