Gazebos

Gazebos are temporary shelters that give shade and cover from light rain on a patio or lawn, or at an outdoor event. This category covers pop-up gazebos with a folding frame, garden gazebos with net curtains, and accessories such as gazebo lanterns.

Size, frame and canopy

Common footprints are 2.5m and 3m square. Pop-up frames open out in one piece and fold down again, while other gazebos are put together from separate parts using the maker's assembly instructions. Steel frames are typical. Canopies are made from water-resistant fabric, often with an air vent in the roof. Side walls give extra shelter, and net curtains help keep insects out. Water resistant does not mean storm proof: canopies are not made for heavy rain, strong wind or snow, and pools of water can stretch and tear the fabric.

Anchoring and weather

Every gazebo must be anchored. Use the pegs, straps or ropes supplied on firm ground, and add leg weights on hard surfaces or very wet ground. As a guide, one maker recommends at least 15kg per leg for a frame up to 3m by 3m, with more when side walls are fitted or the site is exposed. Always attach straps to the frame, never to the canopy. Do not leave a gazebo unattended in strong wind, heavy rain or snow, and take it down if bad weather is forecast. Let the canopy dry completely before you pack it away.

Fire safety

Never use a barbecue under a canopy or awning, and keep patio heaters and fire pits well clear of the gazebo.
