Buying guide: Garden Power Tools

Garden power tools take the effort out of mowing, trimming, cutting and clearing. This category covers rotary, cylinder, hover and robotic lawnmowers, grass and hedge trimmers, chainsaws and blower vacs, plus spares such as mower blades, drive belts, trimmer spools and line, and chainsaw files.

Mower types

  • Rotary: a blade spins horizontally under the deck. Suits most home lawns and copes with longer grass and uneven ground; models with a rear roller leave stripes.
  • Cylinder: a reel of blades cuts against a fixed blade with a scissor action, giving a very fine, low cut for fine lawns.
  • Hover: a rotary mower that floats on a cushion of air instead of wheels, so it is light to move.
  • Robotic: mows on its own and goes back to its dock to recharge.

Power source

Corded electric tools are light and suit smaller gardens within reach of a socket. Battery tools have no cable, and many makers use one battery across a range of tools, so check the voltage and battery system match. Petrol tools are not tied to a cable or battery, but they are noisier, give off fumes and need fuel stored safely: at home, keep no more than 30 litres of petrol in suitable containers, never in the living space.

Using them safely

Plug corded tools into a socket protected by an RCD, or use a plug-in RCD, with outdoor-rated extension leads fully unwound. Know where the cable is at all times, and wait until the grass is dry, even of dew. In England, new outdoor sockets and circuits can be notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety data, including the protective equipment they specify.
