Description

Product Overview

The Adey Filters MagnaClean Micro Filter is a compact magnetic central heating filter designed to capture circulating debris such as magnetite (black sludge) from sealed heating systems. Fitted into the heating circuit, it helps protect boilers, pumps and valves while supporting efficient heat transfer and more reliable performance.

Key Features

  • Magnetic filtration action – helps trap magnetite sludge to protect key boiler and system components.
  • Improves system efficiency – cleaner water supports better heat circulation, helping radiators perform as they should.
  • Compact Micro format – designed for installations where space is limited around the boiler or pipework.
  • Ideal as a replacement part – suitable for maintaining an existing MagnaClean Micro setup and keeping filtration effective.
  • Helps reduce breakdown risk – capturing debris can help minimise blockages and wear on pumps and valves.

Use Case / Application

Designed for sealed central heating systems in domestic properties and light commercial settings, this magnetic filter is typically installed on the return pipe to the boiler where it can capture circulating contamination. Suitable for use during new boiler installs, system upgrades, or as part of ongoing heating water treatment and maintenance.

Common applications include:

  • Boiler cupboards and utility rooms where compact filtration is required
  • Homes experiencing cold spots on radiators caused by sludge build-up
  • Post-powerflush protection to help keep newly cleaned systems running efficiently
  • Annual service and maintenance regimes for long-term system reliability

Problem → Solution

Ideal for heating systems suffering from black sludge, poor circulation or recurring component issues—this magnetic filter helps capture magnetite and debris to reduce wear and support smoother operation.

Buying guide: Central Heating Filters

A central heating filter sits in the heating pipework and traps the sludge that builds up in a wet heating system: magnetite from corrosion, plus non-magnetic debris. Catching it stops the debris reaching the boiler. This category covers in-line filters, packs that pair a filter with cleaner and inhibitor, and replacement filter bags and cartridges for larger units.

How they work

  • Magnetic filters: a magnet holds iron-based debris inside a removable canister for cleaning.
  • Hydrocyclone filters: water spins inside the body and heavier particles settle in a low-flow zone at the base. Many pair this with a magnet and a mesh to catch magnetic and non-magnetic debris.
  • Sidestream filters: units for commercial systems that combine magnets with filter bags or cartridges graded in microns. Coarse grades such as 50 micron suit very dirty systems; fine grades such as 5 micron suit new or freshly flushed ones.

Size and position

Most domestic filters are made for 22mm pipe, with 28mm and larger threaded versions for bigger systems. Fit the filter in-line on the return pipe, under or as close to the boiler as you can. Leave clearance to remove the canister and open the drain, and follow the flow arrow.

Standards and servicing

BS 7593:2019, the code of practice for domestic central heating water, calls for the system to be cleaned and flushed, a permanent in-line filter that captures magnetic and non-magnetic debris, and inhibitor protection. In England, Approved Document L asks for domestic systems to be prepared and commissioned to BS 7593 when a new heating appliance goes in. Service the filter at the annual boiler service.

For the chemicals used alongside a filter, see central heating cleaner and central heating inhibitors.
