Greenhouse accessories help you manage heat, light, pests and hygiene under glass and keep the structure in good repair. Heating and propagation

Holding a greenhouse at about 4°C over winter lets you keep tender plants. Electric heaters are easy to control with a thermostat, and fan heaters also move the air to even out cold corners. Have the electrical supply to a greenhouse installed professionally; in England, new outdoor circuits can be notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. Paraffin and gas heaters suit greenhouses without power, but burning the fuel gives off water and combustion gases, so ventilate while they run. Hang a maximum and minimum thermometer among the plants, as a heater dial can read several degrees out. Electric propagators warm seed trays on a bench or windowsill.

Shading and ventilation

From spring to autumn, shading and ventilation stop the house overheating. Shade netting clips inside the glass. Shading paint goes on the outside of the glass in spring and is washed off in autumn, but it does not suit unpainted wood. Roof vents do most of the work, and automatic vent openers respond to temperature on their own, although slowly.

Pests and hygiene

Yellow sticky traps hung among plants show when whitefly are about, but they also catch helpful insects, so use them with care. A thorough clean in winter reduces pests sheltering in the structure. Fumigators, disinfectants and cleaners are chemicals: follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety data.
