Bathroom accessories are the smaller fittings that make a bathroom work day to day: soap dishes, tumblers and toothbrush holders, toilet brushes and holders, bins, shower curtains, handheld shower sets, bath screen seals, light pulls, cabinets and bathroom scales.

Finish and style

Accessories are made in chrome, stainless steel, black and white finishes and in matching sets, so one style can run through the room. Check the finish against existing taps and fittings, and note any dimensions that matter, such as a shower curtain's width and drop or the glass thickness a bath screen seal is made for.

Fixing

• Freestanding: items such as bins, scales and some toilet brush holders need no fixing at all.
• Wall-mounted: holders, storage units and cabinets usually screw to the wall. Before drilling, check for hidden pipes and cables, and choose screws and plugs to suit the wall.
• Replacement parts: seals, curtain hooks and handsets are sized to fit, so measure before you choose.

Electrics in bathrooms

Replacement light pulls simply attach to an existing ceiling pull switch. Illuminated cabinets, shaver points and other fixed electrical items need care: in England, electrical work in the zone around a bath or shower is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, and must be done by a registered competent person or notified to building control.
