Specialist tools are made for particular vehicle repair and servicing jobs that general hand tools cannot do safely or accurately. This category covers engine timing and locking kits, coil spring compressors, brake pipe and brake spanner tools, oil filter wrenches, drain plug keys, glow plug and oxygen sensor sockets, fuel filter tools, timing lights, axle stands and workshop storage.
Engine timing and locking kits
Timing kits hold the camshafts and crankshaft in the correct position while a timing belt or chain is changed, so the engine timing is not lost. Kits are made for specific engine families, and many are listed by vehicle maker and engine code. Check the kit's application list against your engine code before buying, and follow the vehicle manufacturer's procedure.
Choosing other tools
- Fit: match the socket or key size and drive size to the fastener, for example the square or hex size of a sump drain plug.
- Purpose-made tools: use a proper spring compressor, filter wrench or brake spanner rather than improvising with general tools.
- Testers: circuit testers, timing lights and brake fluid testers help diagnose faults before parts are replaced.
Working under a vehicle
Never work beneath a vehicle held up only by a jack. Lower it onto axle stands of suitable capacity, set on hard, level ground under strong points on the vehicle, use the correct locking pins and chock the wheels still on the ground. Check stands and jacks for damage before use, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for every tool.
