Radiators & Towel Warmers Contd

Buying guide: Column Radiators

Column radiators are made from vertical steel tubes joined into sections, in a style that echoes traditional cast iron radiators. They come in two, three and four column depths, in heights from low models for under windows to tall vertical radiators around 1800mm, with the width set by the number of sections. Finishes include white and other RAL colours, clear lacquer over bare metal and textured or effect finishes.

Heat output

Output is quoted in watts or BTU/h (divide BTU/h by 3.41 to get watts), tested to BS EN 442 at Delta T50: a mean water temperature of 75°C in a room at 20°C. More columns, greater height and more sections all raise the output. Systems running cooler give less heat: at Delta T30, typical of heat pumps and other low temperature systems, a radiator gives roughly half its Delta T50 output. Work out the heat each room needs before choosing the size, and check the output at your system's real temperatures.

Fitting and connections

  • Check the connection positions and pipe centres against the existing pipework, as column radiators can have side, bottom or end connections.
  • Check whether brackets, valves or floor feet are included. Tall column radiators are heavy, so use fixings suited to the wall.

Controls

In England, when a boiler is replaced, Approved Document L expects room by room temperature control, which is usually provided by fitting thermostatic radiator valves on radiators outside the room with the main thermostat.

For valves, see thermostatic radiator valves, or browse the full range of radiators and accessories.
