Buying guide: Air Conditioning & Ventilation

This category covers equipment for cooling and heating air in homes, offices, workshops and commercial buildings: split air conditioning indoor and outdoor units, portable air conditioners, evaporative air coolers, and gas and oil fired warm air unit heaters and cabinet heaters with their flue parts.

Cooling

  • Split systems: a wall mounted indoor unit connected by refrigerant pipes to an outdoor unit. Installing, servicing, leak checking or recovering refrigerant from them must be done by an F gas certified engineer.
  • Portable air conditioners: self-contained units that remove heat and humidity and vent warm air outside through an exhaust hose, usually through a window kit.
  • Evaporative air coolers: cool the air by evaporating water from a tank. They add moisture rather than removing it, need no exhaust hose, and suit dry conditions with good airflow.

Sizing

Cooling and heating capacity is given in kW or BTU/h; 1kW is about 3,412 BTU/h. Choose a capacity to suit the size and use of the space. For split systems and commercial heaters, have the load worked out by the installer.

Warm air heaters

Unit heaters and cabinet heaters heat workshops, industrial units and other large spaces, either free-blowing or ducted. Flue terminals, bends and flashings are made to suit particular heater models and outputs, so check compatibility before ordering. Work on gas pipework, appliances and their gas parts must only be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Oil fired heaters should be installed and serviced by an OFTEC registered technician.
