Buying guide: Self-Adhesive Tape

Self-adhesive tapes stick on with pressure alone, with no separate glue. This category covers decorators' masking tape, duct and cloth repair tape, clear repair tape, pipe repair tape, bitumen flashing tape for roofs and gutters, packing tape, foam strip and self-adhesive cable clips.

Masking tape

Masking tape protects edges and surfaces while you paint. Match the tack to the surface:

General and multi-surface tapes: medium adhesion for cured paintwork, wood trim, glass and metal. Some painters' tapes can stay on for up to three weeks indoors, but for less time in direct sun.
Delicate surface tapes: lower adhesion for wallpaper, treated wood and paint that is at least a day old.

Check the stated clean-removal time on the pack, press the edge down firmly, and peel the tape back at an angle, ideally while the paint is still wet. Widths run from about 19mm to 50mm.

Repair and sealing tapes

Duct tape: a cloth-backed tape with a plastic coating that is water repellent and suits temporary repairs, bundling and protection, rather than long-term outdoor use.
Flashing tape: a bitumen strip with a foil face for sealing roof flashings, felt joints, gutters and downpipes. Surfaces must be clean and dry, porous surfaces may need a primer, and it should not be applied when the surface is below 5°C. Overlap joins and roll them down firmly. Keep it away from silicone sealants, flexible PVC and vinyl.
