Masonry paint is a weather-resistant exterior coating for brick, render, pebbledash, concrete and stone walls. Most is water-based and comes in 2.5, 5 and 10 litre tubs, in whites, creams, greys and stronger colours. The category also includes exterior masonry filler for repairs before painting.

Smooth or textured

Smooth masonry paint suits sound, even surfaces and gives a flat, uniform finish. Textured masonry paint contains fine particles that build a thicker film, which helps cover fine hairline cracks and suits rough render, pebbledash and patched walls. Many masonry paints contain a fungicide that slows the growth of mould and algae on the paint film.

Preparing the wall

• Brush off dirt, loose material and flaking paint, and remove any mould or algae.
• Fill cracks and holes with an exterior masonry filler and let it dry.
• Seal surfaces that are still powdery or chalky after cleaning with a stabilising primer.

Applying it

Check the minimum temperature on the tub before you start: manufacturers typically give 7°C to 8°C or above. Do not paint in rain, fog or frost, and avoid strong direct sun, which can cause blistering. Start at the top, work in manageable sections and keep a wet edge to avoid patchy marks. Plan for two coats, and work out the area of each wall, less doors and windows, to judge how much you need from the coverage on the tub. A long pile roller or a masonry brush gets paint into rough surfaces. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety data.
