Wood care products protect and decorate timber inside and outside the home. This category covers interior varnishes, hardwax oils and door oils, exterior wood stains, garden wood paints, fence and shed treatments, decking finishes and furniture paints, in clear, tinted and coloured finishes.

Interior finishes

• Varnish: forms a clear or tinted protective coat on the surface that shows off the grain and resists scuffs and scratches. Two or three coats are typical.
• Hardwax oil: soaks into the wood and leaves a breathable, microporous finish rather than a surface film, and is used on floors and furniture.
• Furniture and cupboard paints: give an opaque colour to interior woodwork and units.

Exterior finishes

Exterior wood stains, garden wood paints and fence and shed treatments colour and protect outdoor timber such as sheds, fences, planters and garden furniture, and decking finishes are made for timber that is walked on. Wood preservatives that protect against rot, fungi or wood-boring insects are biocidal products, so use them only as the label directs.

Preparing and applying

Make sure the wood is clean, dry and free of grease and old wax, and sand it smooth, often with 120 grit paper, so the finish bonds well. Outside, choose a warm, dry day without wind, especially when spraying. Allow each coat to dry fully, as given on the tin, before adding the next.
