Buying guide: Central Heating Filters

A central heating filter sits in the heating pipework and traps the sludge that builds up in a wet heating system: magnetite from corrosion, plus non-magnetic debris. Catching it stops the debris reaching the boiler. This category covers in-line filters, packs that pair a filter with cleaner and inhibitor, and replacement filter bags and cartridges for larger units.

How they work

  • Magnetic filters: a magnet holds iron-based debris inside a removable canister for cleaning.
  • Hydrocyclone filters: water spins inside the body and heavier particles settle in a low-flow zone at the base. Many pair this with a magnet and a mesh to catch magnetic and non-magnetic debris.
  • Sidestream filters: units for commercial systems that combine magnets with filter bags or cartridges graded in microns. Coarse grades such as 50 micron suit very dirty systems; fine grades such as 5 micron suit new or freshly flushed ones.

Size and position

Most domestic filters are made for 22mm pipe, with 28mm and larger threaded versions for bigger systems. Fit the filter in-line on the return pipe, under or as close to the boiler as you can. Leave clearance to remove the canister and open the drain, and follow the flow arrow.

Standards and servicing

BS 7593:2019, the code of practice for domestic central heating water, calls for the system to be cleaned and flushed, a permanent in-line filter that captures magnetic and non-magnetic debris, and inhibitor protection. In England, Approved Document L asks for domestic systems to be prepared and commissioned to BS 7593 when a new heating appliance goes in. Service the filter at the annual boiler service.

For the chemicals used alongside a filter, see central heating cleaner and central heating inhibitors.
