Bins, tubs and sacks hold and carry household, garden and building waste. Sacks

• Refuse sacks: sized by capacity in litres and by flat size. Standard sacks suit kitchen and household rubbish; heavy duty sacks have thicker film for heavier or sharper loads.
• Clear sacks: let the contents be seen, for example for recycling.
• Garden sacks: for leaves, hedge clippings and green waste.
• Rubble sacks: heavy plastic or woven polypropylene sacks for broken brick, soil and DIY waste. Do not overfill them; you need to lift them safely.

Bins and tubs

Dustbins come in plastic with clip-on lids, in galvanised steel, and in larger wheeled versions. Flexible tubs are made from soft polyethylene that bends without cracking. They are used for garden waste, animal feed, mixing and carrying, and many resist frost and sunlight; check the maker's guidance before using one for food, as not every colour is suitable. Check the capacity in litres and the handle type before choosing.

Getting rid of waste

If someone else takes your household or DIY waste away, such as rubble, timber or bricks, check they are on the register of waste carriers first. You can be fined if your waste is dumped illegally by an unregistered carrier. Your council sets its own rules for household bins and sacks.
