Buying guide: Door Handles, Hinges & Accessories

This category covers door furniture and hinges: lever handles on backplates, butt, ball bearing, parliament, tee and strap hinges, café door hinges, kick plates, letter plates and locking window stays. It also includes replacement handles for appliances such as ovens and dishwashers, and lever handles for some taps and shower bars.

Lever handles

  • Latch handles: for doors fitted with a latch only, with no keyhole.
  • Lock handles: have a keyhole in the backplate, for doors with a mortice lock.
  • Narrow plate handles: slimmer backplates for doors with narrow stiles.

Measure the backplate and the position of the spindle and keyhole so the new handle covers the old holes.

Hinges

  • Butt hinges: set into the edge of the door and the frame. Ball bearing butts have bearings in the knuckle to carry the door's weight.
  • Parliament hinges: let the door open right back so it lies flat against the wall.
  • Tee and strap hinges: fixed to the face of gates, sheds and ledged doors.

Single axis hinges for buildings are tested under BS EN 1935, which covers load, endurance and corrosion. Check the hinge suits the door's weight, and use enough hinges for the door's height and weight.

Fire doors

On a fire door, use only hardware that suits the door's certification. In England, Approved Document B says that, unless tested as part of the fire doorset, the essential parts of any hinge on a fire door should be made of materials that melt at no less than 800°C.

For screws and fixings, see fasteners and fixings; for door locks, see deadbolts, locks and keys.
