Head unit size and fascias

Aftermarket head units are made in standard sizes under ISO 7736: single DIN, and double DIN, which is twice the height and leaves room for a screen. Many cars have a factory opening that is not a standard size, so a fascia panel made for that vehicle converts it to a single or double DIN slot. Check whether your car takes single or double DIN before choosing a head unit.

Wiring and adaptors

An ISO harness adaptor plugs into the car's own power and speaker connectors and gives the standard ISO plug used by most aftermarket head units, so the original wiring does not need cutting. Speaker adaptors, aerial adaptors and steering wheel control interfaces are made for particular vehicles and model years, so match the make, model and year to the product. Many interfaces let the steering wheel buttons work with the new head unit.

Amplifiers and power

Size power cable, terminals and fuses to the amplifier maker's recommendations. Fuse the power cable close to the battery, and disconnect the battery's negative terminal before you start work. Modern vehicles have complex electrics, so if you are unsure, have a specialist installer do the work.
