Buying guide: Garden Watering

Garden watering covers the tools that carry water, and liquid feeds and treatments, to where plants need them: watering cans and roses, hose fittings, connectors and nozzles, spray guns, hose carts and reels, and pressure sprayers from small hand-held bottles and plant misters to pump-up, knapsack and wheeled sprayers.

Watering well

Water early in the morning, when less evaporates, not in the heat of the day. Evening watering works too, but leaves stay damp overnight, which can encourage pests and fungal disease. Water less often but thoroughly, so the soil is moist well below the surface, then let the top dry out before watering again. A watering can gives the most control and uses water most efficiently; use a fine rose for seedlings and newly sown seed. Hoses use more water, and sprinklers are among the least efficient ways to water. Storing rainwater in a water butt cuts the use of mains water.

Hoses and the outside tap

Match connectors to the hose bore and to the click-fit system you already use. An outside tap that feeds a hose must have backflow protection, such as a double check valve built into the tap or fitted inside the building, so dirty water cannot be drawn back into the drinking water supply. This is a requirement of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.

Sprayers and chemicals

When using a sprayer for weedkiller, pesticide or feed, read the label before you start and follow its dose and directions exactly; a stronger mix will not work better and can harm plants. Keep chemicals in their original containers, and never pour leftovers down a drain or sink. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety data.

For hoses and reels, see garden hose, reels and carts; for more sprayers, see garden sprayers.
