Buying guide: Fireplace Cleaning & Maintenance

Fireplace cleaning and maintenance products keep wood burners, multi-fuel stoves and open fires sealed and clean. The range covers stove door rope seals and rope adhesive, heat resistant stove paint and coal paint, fire cement and heat resistant bonding, stove glass cleaner, grate and stove polish, chimney cleaner and slate oil for hearths.

Rope seals

The rope around the stove door keeps the firebox airtight, so the air controls can manage the fire. Replace it when it is frayed or flattened and no longer fills its groove, or when the fire burns faster than usual or the glass blackens quickly. A simple check is to close the door on a strip of paper: if it pulls out easily anywhere, the seal is worn. Measure the old rope's diameter, or check with the stove manufacturer, and fix the new rope with the heat resistant adhesive made for it. Work only on a cold stove and wear gloves, as the glass fibres can irritate skin.

Paint, polish and cleaners

Stove paint is made to withstand high temperatures and cures when the stove is first heated. Expect smell and some smoke during the first few fires, and keep the room well ventilated. Use glass cleaners, polishes and fire cement as directed on the pack, and follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety data.

Chimneys and safety

Have the chimney swept regularly: HETAS advises at least twice a year when burning wood, ideally before the heating season. In England, a carbon monoxide alarm should be fitted in the room when a new or replacement solid fuel, oil or gas appliance (other than a gas cooker) is installed. HETAS is the competent person scheme for solid fuel appliances.

For replacement grates, see fire grates and ashpans, or browse fires, stoves and accessories.
