Buying guide: Garden Hose, Reels & Carts

This category covers garden hoses and the kit that stores, connects and controls them: hose reels and carts, connectors and adaptors, spray guns and nozzles, sprinklers, water timers and pressure reducers, plus micro-irrigation parts such as connectors, mini sprinklers, stakes, tees and elbows. Some ranges also include pump-action pressure sprayers and car-washing brushes.

Hoses, reels and carts

Choose a hose long enough to reach the far end of the garden from the tap, allowing for paths and corners. Reels keep the hose wound and tidy when not in use, and wheeled carts let you pull a long hose around a bigger plot; check the hose capacity, which runs to 60m or 90m on some carts. Many reels and carts come ready assembled with hose, connectors and a spray gun.

Connectors and watering kit

Click-on connectors join the hose to the tap, spray gun, sprinkler and other accessories, and double male connectors join two hoses. Spray guns range from single-jet nozzles to multi-pattern guns. Sprinklers are rated by the area they cover in square metres. A water timer turns the supply on and off on a schedule, and micro-irrigation uses narrow supply tube with adjustable mini sprinklers to water pots and borders.

Water regulations

Water must not be able to flow back from a hose into the drinking water supply. Under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, an outside tap used with a hose needs backflow protection, usually a double check valve fitted inside the building where it is protected from frost. A hand-held hose should also have a control that shuts off the flow when released, such as a spray gun with a self-closing trigger, to prevent waste.

For storing rainwater, see water butts, or browse garden sprayers.
