Decorating sundries are the consumables used to prepare, protect and clean up around a painting or wallpapering job. This category covers masking tape and masking film, white spirit, turpentine substitute, cellulose thinners, brush cleaners and restorers, paint and varnish removers, wallpaper remover, decorators' sponges and cleaning wipes.
Masking and protection
Masking tape keeps paint off edges, glass and fittings. Use a delicate surface tape on wallpaper and recently painted walls, and a multi-surface tape on fully cured paintwork, wood, glass and metal. Check how long the tape can stay on before it should come off, and peel it away at an angle while the paint is still wet for a clean line. Masking film comes in wide rolls to cover floors, furniture, windows and anything else you need to keep clean.
Solvents and cleaners
- Water-based paints: clean brushes and rollers in warm, soapy water until it runs clear.
- Oil and solvent-based paints: work the brush through white spirit, turpentine substitute or a brush cleaner, then wash it out.
- Disposal: never pour solvents down a sink or drain. Leave used solvent in a closed jar so the paint settles, then reuse the clear liquid.
White spirit and similar solvents are flammable, can cause drowsiness, and can be fatal if swallowed and breathed into the lungs. Use them only in a well-ventilated area, keep them away from flames and sparks, and store them out of reach of children. With solvents, strippers and removers, follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety data.
