Televisions

A 4K Ultra HD screen has 3840 by 2160 pixels, four times as many as Full HD. To watch 4K you need a 4K television; HDR improves colour and contrast but is not needed to show 4K. Ordinary broadcast TV channels are not shown in 4K, so most 4K viewing is streamed through apps, which needs a fast broadband connection. Smart TVs connect to the internet: since April 2024, makers of smart products sold in the UK must avoid easily guessed default passwords and publish how long they will provide security updates, so check that period before you choose.

Cables and chargers

• Cables: match the connector on your device, such as USB-C, micro USB or another phone connector, and check the length you need.
• Wireless charging pads: look for official Qi certification, which means the pad has been tested for safety and works with certified phones from other makers. Wording such as works with Qi does not mean it has been certified.
• Mains and car chargers: choose ones from a reputable source, as counterfeit chargers can overheat or give an electric shock.

Charging safely

Check chargers and leads for scorch marks, swelling, cracks or buzzing, and stop using any that show them. Unplug devices once they are charged, avoid charging overnight or while you are out, and keep chargers away from water, heat and direct sun.
