Buying guide: Spray Paint

Spray paint is paint in an aerosol can, used for touching up, small projects, metalwork, garden furniture, plastics and line marking. The range includes gloss, satin and matt colours, RAL and vehicle colours, primers, metallic and chrome effects, high heat and radiator paints, stone effect finishes and upside down marking paint, plus related aerosols such as damp seal and graffiti remover.

Choosing the right aerosol

  • General purpose colours: for wood, metal and many plastics; check the label for the surfaces listed.
  • Primers: help the top coat grip bare surfaces and are recommended on bare wood and items that get heavy use.
  • High heat paints: for surfaces that get hot, such as stoves and barbecues, up to the temperature stated on the can.
  • Marking paint: sprays with the can upside down, for marking out ground, floors and survey points.
  • RAL colours: RAL is a colour reference system, so a RAL number identifies a specific shade.

Getting an even finish

Make sure the surface is clean, dry and free of grease, and mask off anything you do not want painted. Shake the can for the time on the label, counting from when the mixing ball starts to rattle. Hold it at the distance given on the can: too far away or in hot conditions, the paint dries in the air. Build up several thin coats with long, even, overlapping strokes rather than one heavy coat. Spray in mild, dry conditions, as cold weather slows drying.
