Buying guide: Shower Trays

A shower tray forms the floor of a shower and directs water to the waste outlet. Trays come in square, rectangular, quadrant and offset quadrant shapes in a wide spread of sizes, and many are supplied with a matching waste. Low-profile trays sit only a few centimetres above the floor, and anti-slip finishes are made for extra grip underfoot.

Shape, size and hand

Measure the space: note the length and width of the area, and keep the tray size the same as the enclosure or screen you plan to fit.
Offset quadrants and some rectangles are handed: left or right hand describes where the curve or waste sits, so check the drawing before you choose.
Waste: stone resin trays commonly take a 90mm shower waste. Approved Document H gives a 40mm trap with a 50mm water seal as a guide for showers.

Installation

Manufacturers typically specify that the tray is bedded on a full sand and cement mortar bed so it is supported across its whole base; silicone, foam or adhesive is not a substitute. The tray has a built-in fall, so it is levelled across its top edges. Plan access to the waste before fixing, test the waste and connections for leaks, then seal the tiling line with silicone. For a raised installation, use the riser kit made for that tray. Drainage work should comply with Building Regulations Part H.

Clean trays with warm soapy water rather than abrasive cleaners. To complete the shower, see shower enclosures and bathroom showers.
