Buying guide: Wildlife & Pet Care

Wildlife and pet care covers feeding and housing garden birds and caring for pets and pond fish. This category includes suet pellets, fat balls, suet bars and dried mealworms, seed and ground feeders, feeding stations and nest boxes, pond fish food, and pet products such as carriers, crates, harnesses, car seat covers, travel bowls, toys and shampoos.

Feeding garden birds

  • Suet and fat products: high energy foods that can be offered all year round.
  • Mealworms: popular with robins and tits; soak dried mealworms before putting them out in spring and summer.
  • Seed and peanuts: current guidance is to feed these through the colder months, roughly November to April. Never put out loose peanuts in the breeding season.

Keep feeders clean to limit the spread of disease: brush them out when refilling, scrub them with a mild disinfectant every week, and move them from time to time so droppings do not build up. Clear away uneaten food within a day or two, and give fresh water in a shallow dish, changed daily.

Pets on the move

The Highway Code says dogs and other animals should be suitably restrained in a vehicle so they cannot distract the driver or be hurt, or hurt you, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are all ways to do this. Choose a harness or carrier by your pet's size and weight, and check it fits before travelling.

Pond and aquarium fish

Fish foods come as floating sticks for pond fish, colour and growth sticks for koi, and tablets for aquarium fish, alongside water treatments. Choose a food made for your fish and follow the feeding guide on the pack.
