Buying guide: Baths & Bath Panels

This category covers baths and the parts that finish them: single ended, double ended, shower and freestanding baths, front and end bath panels, leg sets, headrests, bath screens and decorative wall panels.

Materials

  • Acrylic: moulded from acrylic sheet. The sheet thickness is often quoted, for example 8mm.
  • Enamelled steel: pressed steel with a vitreous enamel finish, made in plain and anti-slip versions.

Baths for domestic use are covered by BS EN 14516, which tests them for cleanability and durability, and acrylic baths made from cast acrylic sheet by BS EN 198.

Size and layout

Common sizes are 1500, 1600 and 1700mm long by 700 to 800mm wide, so measure the space first. Pick the number of tap holes to suit the taps: two for pillar taps or a two-hole mixer, or none where the taps are mounted on the wall. Double ended baths are shaped so you can lie back at either end. Shower baths are wider at the showering end and are handed left or right, so check which side the wall and screen will be. Twin grip baths have a handle on each side.

Panels and fitting

Front and end panels are sold by length and width to match the bath. Leg sets and cradles support the bath on the floor: adjust them so the bath is level and fully supported before the edges are sealed. Waterproof wall panels can line the walls around the bath instead of tiles.

In England, in a new home or one formed by a change of use, Approved Document G expects the hot water supply to a fixed bath to be limited to 48°C, usually with an in-line blending valve.

For taps, see bathroom taps; for screens and glass enclosures, see shower enclosures.
