Buying guide: Tanks

This category is mainly heating oil storage tanks for homes and businesses that run an oil-fired boiler, with matching accessories such as tank alarms, remote oil level monitors and oil de-aerators. Tanks are made in plastic (polyethylene) or steel, in horizontal, vertical, slimline and rectangular shapes, from about 1,000 litres up to 10,000 litres.

Bunded tanks and secondary containment

A bunded tank has a second outer tank that holds any oil leaking from the inner one; the bund should hold at least 110% of the tank's contents. In England, guidance under Building Regulations Part J says a domestic tank of up to 3,500 litres needs this secondary containment where there is a significant pollution risk, for example when the tank holds more than 2,500 litres, sits within 10m of a stream, river, lake or ditch, within 50m of a well, borehole or spring, near an open drain, or where the vent pipe cannot be seen from the filling point. In England, larger domestic tanks and most tanks at business premises fall under the oil storage regulations instead, which also require secondary containment.

Outlets, siting and accessories

Bottom outlet: suits a gravity feed, where the tank sits higher than the boiler burner.
Top outlet: used with sub-gravity systems, where a pump or lifter draws the oil up to the burner.
Siting: Approved Document J sets fire separation distances, usually 1.8m from buildings and 760mm from a boundary, or a fire wall where the tank must be closer.
