Buying guide: Paint Brushes

Paint brushes apply paint, varnish and woodstain where a roller is too large or too clumsy: cutting in along ceilings and skirting, painting woodwork, doors and window frames, and touching up small areas. This category covers single brushes from half an inch to four inches, angled and corner brushes, multi-brush packs and small touch-up brushes.

Filament type

  • Synthetic filament: use for water-based paints such as emulsion and water-based gloss and satin. Synthetic brushes also work with solvent-based paint, and need no breaking in, which suits occasional use.
  • Natural bristle: preferred by many decorators for solvent-based gloss and varnish, but it needs breaking in first.

Width and shape

As a guide, a three-quarter inch angled brush suits window bars and tight corners, 1 inch suits door frames and small edges, 1.5 inch suits skirting boards, 2 to 2.5 inch suits cupboard and panelled doors, and 3 to 4 inch brushes cover larger flat areas quickly. Angled tips give more control for precise work such as cutting in along an edge.

Cleaning and storage

Clean brushes straight after use: warm soapy water for water-based paint, and a purpose-made brush cleaner for solvent-based paint. Work the cleaner through the bristles, spin or shake out the excess, comb them straight and let the brush dry flat. Keeping it in its original sleeve helps it hold its shape.

Wood and metal painted before the 1960s may carry lead paint: do not dry sand or burn it off, and keep any debris wet. For larger walls and ceilings, see rollers and trays, or browse paint.
