Cast iron drainage covers soil and waste pipe systems and traditional cast iron rainwater goods. It is often chosen for heritage and conservation buildings. The range includes pipes, bends, branches, access pipes, couplings, gutters, hopper heads, shoes, swan necks and brackets.

Soil and waste

Cast iron soil and drainage systems are made to BS EN 877, which covers pipes, fittings and joints from DN40 to DN600 for use above and below ground. Modern systems use plain-ended pipe joined with couplings, which are made in different pressure ratings, while some traditional-looking systems have push-fit sockets. Size is given as a nominal diameter, so match the system and its couplings to the existing pipe.

Rainwater

Cast iron rainwater goods are covered by BS 460, which includes half round, ogee and beaded gutters and round and rectangular pipes from DN50 to DN150.

• Gutters: match the profile and size, and use the matching stop ends, angles, outlets and union clips.
• Downpipes: pipes with ears have cast lugs that fix straight to the wall; pipes without ears need separate brackets.
• Hoppers, shoes and offsets: check the outlet size and the projection from the wall.

Choosing and fitting

Measure the existing pipe or gutter, note the profile, and check whether the parts come primed for painting or with a finish coat. New drainage work should comply with Building Regulations Part H.
