Buying guide: Flue & Chimney Systems

Flue and chimney products carry smoke and combustion gases from stoves, fires and boilers safely out of the building. This category covers flexible flue liners and kits, stove adaptors, rigid flue lengths and locking bands, gas flue terminals, and chimney cowls, rain caps and bird guards.

Flexible liners

A flexible metal liner relines an existing chimney; it should not be the main liner of a new one. Liners are usually twin skin stainless steel in 316 or 904 grade, sized by diameter, commonly 125mm or 150mm, and should carry a BS EN 1856-2 designation that suits the appliance, fuel and flue gas temperature. Sweep the chimney before relining. When an appliance is replaced, an old metal liner should normally be replaced too, unless it is recent and in good condition.

Rigid systems, cowls and guards

  • Factory-made metal chimneys: built from lengths, bends and bands, designated under BS EN 1856-1, and kept the stated distance from combustible materials.
  • Cowls and rain caps: anti-downdraught cowls stop wind pushing smoke back down, and rain caps keep water out. Sizes refer to the inside diameter of the pot or flue.
  • Bird guards: stop nesting birds blocking the flue. Gas and solid fuel guards use different mesh sizes, as fine gas mesh can clog with soot, so choose one made for your fuel.

Installation and safety

In England, flue work falls under Building Regulations Part J. Solid fuel installations must be notified to building control, which a HETAS registered installer can do for you, and need a carbon monoxide alarm. Gas flues and appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and oil installations by an OFTEC registered technician.

For stoves and fireside items, see fires, stoves and accessories.
