Buying guide: Slug & Snail Control

Slug and snail control products protect seedlings, vegetables and soft-leaved plants from being eaten. This category covers slug pellets, barrier granules, gels and sprays, wool mats, barrier tape, reusable plant guards, slug traps and biological control.

Pellets

Garden slug pellets for home use are now generally based on ferric phosphate, an iron compound. Metaldehyde pellets can no longer be sold, and their outdoor use has been banned in Great Britain since 31 March 2022 because of the risk to birds and mammals. Scatter ferric phosphate pellets thinly and evenly across the area you want to protect, not in heaps or rings around single plants. Repeat the treatment once the first pellets have been eaten.

Barriers, traps and biological control

Barriers: wool mats, granules, tape and plant guards aim to keep slugs away from individual plants or pots. Results in real gardens can be mixed, so combine them with other methods.
Traps: sunk into the soil near vulnerable plants and emptied regularly. Torchlit searches on mild, damp evenings also help.
Nematodes: microscopic worms watered into moist soil that infect slugs. They need the soil to be between 5°C and 20°C and are less effective in heavy clay.
