Buying guide: Adhesives

Adhesives bond materials together without nails or screws. This category covers grab and construction adhesives, wood glue, contact adhesive, superglue, hot-melt glue guns, wallpaper overlap and border adhesive, ready-mixed tile adhesive and grout, and grout care products.

Choosing an adhesive

  • Grab adhesives: thick, high-tack adhesives in cartridges for fixing skirting, panels and trim to walls. Hybrid sealant adhesives both bond and seal.
  • Wood glue: PVA wood adhesives are classed D1 to D4 under BS EN 204. D1 and D2 are for interior use; D3 is water resistant and D4 waterproof.
  • Contact adhesive: spread a thin coat on both surfaces, leave until touch dry, then align carefully and press together. The bond is immediate, so position the parts correctly first time.
  • Superglue: a fast-setting cyanoacrylate adhesive for small, close-fitting repairs. Keep it off skin.
  • Hot-melt glue: glue sticks melted in a glue gun, for light craft and repair work.

Tile adhesive and grout

Tile adhesives are classified under BS EN 12004 as cementitious (C), dispersion or ready-mixed paste (D) or reaction resin (R), with C2 having improved adhesion over C1. Grouts are classed under BS EN 13888 as cementitious (CG1 normal, CG2 improved) or reaction resin (RG). Check the tile type and size, and whether the area gets wet, against the product's class.

Using adhesives safely

Surfaces should be clean, dry and free of dust and grease. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety data, particularly for solvent-based products, and work with good ventilation.
