Buying guide: Safety & Security

Safety and security covers the locks and hardware that secure homes, sheds, gates and workplaces: padlocks, nightlatches, profile cylinder key blanks, door handles and knobs, hinges and gate latches. It also includes workplace safety items such as lockout padlocks and chemical spill kits, and a range of replacement light bulbs.

Padlocks

Padlocks tested to BS EN 12320 carry a security grade from 1 to 6, based on attack tests, with higher grades giving more protection. The standard also grades durability and corrosion resistance, which matters for padlocks left outside. Choose the grade by what you are protecting, then the shackle style (open, closed or shrouded) and body material. Stainless steel shackles and weather-resistant bodies suit gates and sheds. Keyed alike sets let one key open several padlocks, and combination padlocks need no key.

Door locks and cylinders

Profile cylinders, used in many uPVC and composite doors, can be rated under the TS007 scheme. Cylinders with a 3-star rating are tested against a range of attacks, including snapping, picking and drilling. When replacing a cylinder, measure from the centre of the fixing screw to each end so the new one sits flush. Nightlatches are rim locks fixed to the inside face of a front door; check the backset and door thickness the latch is made for.

Workplace safety and other items

Lockout padlocks secure an isolator in the off position so equipment cannot be switched on while someone works on it, as part of safe isolation. Spill kits are rated by the volume of liquid they can absorb. For light bulbs, match the cap type (such as ES, SES, BC or G9), the bulb shape and the wattage or light output to the fitting.

For door hardware and fittings, see ironmongery; for screws and bolts, see fasteners and fixings.
