Buying guide: Kitchen Sinks

Kitchen sinks are made in stainless steel, ceramic and composite, in inset, sit-on and Belfast styles, with single, one-and-a-half or double bowls. This category also covers cleaners' and utility sinks, basket strainer wastes and waste kits, overflow parts, sink brackets and legs, and food waste disposers.

Bowls, drainers and fitting style

Bowl layout: 1.0 is a single bowl, 1.5 adds a smaller half bowl, and 2.0 gives two full-size bowls.
Drainer: choose a left or right hand drainer to suit the layout; reversible sinks can be fitted either way round.
Inset: drops into a hole cut in the worktop, so check the cut-out size against the worktop and the unit below.
Sit-on: rests on top of a base unit of matching width instead of a worktop.
Belfast: a deep ceramic sink supported on brackets or legs, often with the front left on show.

Taps and wastes

Count the tap holes before choosing taps: one for a monobloc mixer, two for separate pillar taps or a two-hole mixer, or none where the tap is mounted on the worktop or wall. Waste kits are made for each bowl layout, and many sinks come with a basket strainer waste and overflow.
