Power tool spares and accessories are the bits, blades and discs that do the cutting and driving: masonry, wood and diamond drill bits, holesaws and arbors, screwdriver bit sets, multi-tool blades, jigsaw blades, and cutting and grinding discs for angle grinders.
Drill bits and holesaws
- Masonry bits: carbide-tipped bits for brick, block, stone and concrete, sized by diameter and working length, for example 6mm x 150mm. Match the diameter to the wall plug or fixing.
- Flat wood bits: spade-shaped bits for boring larger holes through timber.
- Diamond bits: for very hard materials. Check the pack for the materials each one is made for, and whether it needs water or a slow speed.
- Holesaws: cut large round holes for pipes, sockets and fittings. Most fit onto an arbor with a pilot drill, so check the arbor suits the holesaw size.
Blades and discs
Check that the blade or disc fits the tool: the shank or fitting type for jigsaw and multi-tool blades, and the diameter and bore for grinder discs. Choose by material, such as stainless steel cutting discs for metal, bimetal multi-tool blades for wood with nails, and laminate blades for flooring. Every abrasive disc has a maximum permitted speed set by its maker. It must never be run faster, so check that the speed marked on the disc is at least the top speed of the grinder.
Safety
Fit discs only to tools with the guard in place, and wear eye protection and the other protective equipment the tool and disc makers specify. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for both the tool and the accessory, and check discs for cracks or damage before fitting them.
