Weed control products kill or remove unwanted plants in lawns, borders, paths, patios and gravel. How weedkillers work

• Contact: act quickly on the leaves they touch, but tough weeds may need a second treatment.
• Systemic: taken in through the leaves and carried through the whole plant, including the roots. They are slower, and results can take up to a few weeks to show.
• Selective lawn weedkillers: target lawn weeds such as dandelions and clover without killing the grass.
• Residual or preventer: stay active in the treated ground to stop new weeds coming through, in some cases for a whole season. Check the label for where they may be used.

Choosing and applying

Ready-to-use sprays are handy for small areas and spot treatment. Concentrates are diluted before use and suit larger areas. Apply on a calm, dry, warm day while weeds are growing actively, and avoid spraying shortly before rain, which can wash some products off. Keep children and pets off treated areas until they are completely dry, or for as long as the label says.

Only choose and use weedkillers that are authorised for home garden use in the UK, and read the label before you choose and again before each use.
