Firelighters

  • Block and wrapped firelighters: many contain kerosene and are classed as a flammable solid. Keep them away from heat and flames and out of reach of children.
  • Natural firelighters: made from wood wool, they suit log burners, open fires, fire pits and barbecues.

Firelighters burn at a steadier rate than newspaper. Set small pieces of dry kindling over them with gaps for air, and follow the lighting instructions for your stove.

Logs and solid fuel

In England, wood sold in units under two cubic metres must be certified Ready to Burn, with a moisture content of 20% or less. Manufactured solid fuels such as smokeless coal and briquettes must be authorised, and bagged house coal can no longer be supplied. In a smoke control area, smoke must not be released from a chimney: burn only authorised fuels, or wood in an exempt appliance. Your local council can tell you whether you live in one.

Barbecue fuel and paraffin

Charcoal and briquettes are for outdoor barbecues. Never use a barbecue indoors or in a tent, as it gives off carbon monoxide, which can kill.
