Buying guide: Wheelbarrows & Trolleys

Wheelbarrows and trolleys move soil, compost, rubble, bags and tools around the garden or site without carrying the weight by hand. This category covers garden and builders' wheelbarrows, folding trolleys and garden trolleys, children's barrows and barrow-style planters.

Tray, capacity and frame

Capacity: barrow trays are sized in litres, commonly 85 to 120 litres. A bigger tray carries more, but a full load is heavier to push and tip.
Steel trays: galvanised or powder coated steel pans are used on heavy-duty builders' barrows.
Plastic trays: polypropylene and HDPE trays resist corrosion and will not rust. Some barrows come boxed for home assembly.
Frame: heavy-duty barrows use a one-piece tubular steel frame with welded brackets and front supports.

Wheels

Pneumatic wheels are air filled, with a tyre and inner tube, and give a cushioned ride over uneven ground, which suits gardening, but they can puncture. Puncture-proof wheels cannot be punctured by sharp objects, which helps on building sites. Solid rubber wheels are another heavy-duty option. Using them safely

Soft or loose ground such as gravel, sand or mud, slopes and obstacles on the route all increase the effort and the risk of strain, so plan a clear route, do not overload the barrow and keep it in good repair. Folding trolleys carry a stated maximum load, such as 60kg; keep within it.
